Senate approves P10K teaching allowance bill on 3rd, final reading

The Senate on Monday approved on third and final reading a bill seeking to increase the teaching allowance of public school teachers to P10,000 in the next four academic years.

Senator Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr., the sponsor of Senate Bill No. 1092 or Teachers' Allowance Act, proposed a "progressive" schedule for the allowance increase.

The proposed law states that the teaching allowance of teachers in the next four academic years would be:
P 5,000 for School Year 2021- 2022,
P 7,500 for S.Y. 2022-2023,
P 7,500 for S.Y. 2023-2024, and
P10,000 for S.Y. 2024-2025.

If signed into law, the grant of the increased cash allowance would “cover teachers who are engaged in teaching public basic education, and shall be used for the purchase of “tangible and intangible” teaching supplies and materials for the implementation of various teaching modalities recognized by the Department of Education (DepEd).
